Reference A brake is a mechanism used to slow or stop the movement of a vehicle. This mechanismworks by applying force to the wheels or drive system of the vehicle. Basically, it is used to control the movement of the vehicle by reducing its speed or stopping it completely. Brakes are critical to safety and vehicle control.

There are two main types of brakes commonly used on vehicles:

  • Disc brakes: This type of brake uses brake pads on a special disc mounted over the wheels. When the brake pedal is depressed, the pads on the disc are compressed, slowing or stopping the rotation of the wheel.
  • Drum brakes: Drum brakes use brake shoes mounted inside a drum located on the inside of the wheel. When the brake pedal is depressed, the brake shoes move toward the drum, slowing or stopping the wheel.

Brake Disc:

  • Cast Iron: Brake discs used on most vehicles are typically made of cast iron. Cast iron is durable and heat resistant, making it suitable for brake discs that are frequently exposed to high temperatures.
  • Composite Materials: Performance and luxury vehicles may use carbon ceramic or carbon composite brake discs. These materials are lighter and generally provide better performance, but are more expensive.
